| In Moldova, a
successor state to the former Soviet
Union, many Jews who speak the Romanian language are now enjoying
the opportunity to mingle with Jews in Romania, just to the southwest
across the Dnieper River. In 1996, in Chisinau (Kishinev), the capital
of the country, The Ronald S. Lauder Foundation we began to support
The Hebrew Academy of Moldova.
The
Hebrew Academy of Moldova, Kishinev
The Hebrew Academy of Moldova has an enrollment of 63 students
- 34 boys and 29 girls (18 students more than last year). Boys and
girls, housed in separate dormitories, share a main building owned
by the Moldavian government that comprises a study hall, synagogue,
dining room, classrooms, and a computer lab.
The Lauder
- ORT Technical Training Center at the Jewish School
In 2000, The Ronald S. Lauder Foundation became one of the sponsors
of a soon-to-be instated ORT Center in this dynamic Jewish School
with 436 students. The addition of new technological facilities
will help the School to maintain its edge and to continue to attract
high-caliber students who will be a credit to the Jewish Community.
The Hebrew
Academy of Moldova participates in a multitude of activities
that benefit the Jewish Community. Their dining hall is used for
a senior's lunch program and along with the synagogue, provides
a welcome rest bit for Jewish travelers. Students visit the elderly
and volunteer at the local burial society.
